About the Melville Ancient tartan

Melville Ancient is a clan and family tartan. Clan and family tartans are traditionally worn by those of the name and their kin, though no law stops anyone wearing any tartan.

A tartan is one pattern of threads, and the same pattern comes in different depths of colour, each called a setting. Melville is available in three of them — Ancient, Modern and Muted — and this page is the ancient one. Ancient settings run lighter, weathered ones look faded as old cloth does, and modern settings are the deepest.
